Celebrate BRAVE Podcast

Together we are redefining BRAVE:

how we identify | how we live it | how we celebrate it

Episode Description

Proof that the current global concept that women aren’t founders is false. The actual problem is that 2.3% of ALL VC funding goes to women and of that only 0.27% for historically disadvantaged women

The moment Zoe discovered Glennon Doyle’s book Untamed and it changed her so much she got a tattoo with the word untamed. (BRAVE moment)

“When something is not working out, just change it, just to have the freedom to do it and always have the bravery to do it.” – Zoe Evans (BRAVE role model

The beginning of FFS – Female Founder Squad that supports female-led start-ups to get the funding they want and deserve.

    HIGHLIGHTS:

THE PERCENTAGE OF VC FUNDING ALLOCATED TO WOMEN FOUNDERS is 2.3% in 2021

This (2020) has been a record year for VC funding. So in the states, the US had 156 billion BVC funding in 2020, followed by China, with 46 billion and followed by the UK 15 billion. Women across the globe got 2.3% of that hundreds of billions of dollars invested into their start-ups. Just to add a further layer of insult on top of that, if you are a woman from a historically disadvantaged group, you got 0.27% of that 2.3%.

HOW OUR WORLD IS LIMITED BY SYSTEM BUILT BY MEN FOR MEN & IT IS HOLDING US  ALL BACK

Nearly everything is based on measurements and lifestyle of man from primarily European ancestry. Mobile phones are designed for a man’s hand. Medicine is designed on the weight of men’s bodies. Even car safety measures: 46% likely to be more seriously injured in a car crash because the seatbelt and the seat and the steering wheel has been designed for male bodies and our bodies don’t fit that. So we’re more likely to be far more seriously injured.

ZOE EVANS BRAVE STORY BEGAN WITH READING GLENNON DOYLE’S BOOK; UNTAMED

Celebrate BRAVE started with a quote from Glennon Doyle’s Untamed. Zoe brings it back in the first episode of Season Two.
“I read the book and it hit me square in the jaw and the pit of my stomach, because, you know, I used to be this kid who was so righteous, opinionated. I was going to change the world. I didn’t care what people thought and you know what let’s just say like the book describes all these small grains of sand that go through a woman’s life that just take that little bit of spirit out of you every time they make you feel ashamed for being bossy, when actually bossy is being assertive or being called digressive for being assertive.”

ZOE EVANS BRAVE ROLE MODELS ARE THE WOMEN IN HER FAMILY

“Brave for me is my heritage…my own mom was a single parent for a long time. She took my brother and I, again, she left my, my father was an alcoholic. He wasn’t abusive in the sense, but he just, he was ill. That wasn’t an environment to bring up two kids. He burned our house down and left us with nothing. And, you know, she just got on with it.”

Zoe shares two female role models who showed her how taking risks and choosing their own joy can make everything possible.

THE FEMALE FOUNDER SQUAD SUPPORTING WOMEN GET FUNDING

I just want to showcase female lead products and services and give them that global exposure that they want. So that’s happening. And then thirdly, and probably one of the most important ones is the investor matching tool. We know 2.3% of female founders get funded across the globe. So for me, the data has screamed out for such a long time. that this process doesn’t work. This process of VC funding, angel funding was designed and built by men for men like everything else in the world that we discussed. As intelligent, amazing, awesome women, why are we not finding our own route to funding?
