Right now, in 2024, being on the job market is tough. There have been so many lay-off and women have been impacted an estimated 65% more than men.

Which means that some companies are out on the market acting WILD.

Therefore, it is even more important that you are clear on your brave boundaries during interview processes.

For example, a client was asked to fly to headquarters, present a business solution for the hiring company’s product, and do it all for FREE. 😵 This position was a fully remote position with no expectation for travel.

Thankfully we had already identified a set of simple, clear boundaries (past on past experiences of not having them and getting screwed)

  • she will not travel for free for a potential job
  • she will not create a business solution for free
  • she will not do more than five hours of unpaid interviewing

Instead of accepting or rejecting the company’s ask, we crafted a response that included a short-term, paid consultation so that she — an experienced expert in this field — could fulfill the (rather extensive) business needs outlined within their “interview presentation prep” document. It was very reasonably priced too.

They declined her offer.

She declined to continue.

Later she found out that more than two candidates did fly in, did present a business solution, and did not get the job. In fact, the company didn’t hire for the role at all.

The chance that the content presented during the candidates’ presentations will be used by that company — without paying those candidates! — is, sadly, extremely high.

Which made her boundaries even more powerful and important for her experience and her self-confidence overtime.
