Welcome to a first for the Celebrate Brave podcast: an unexpected but very necessary part 2 for a listener question episode, E93: How Do I Hire More Women.
The original episode got an unprecedented amount of feedback. Your feedback means so much to me. So this episode is to deepen the conversation. I answer questions that came in and also push back I got.
I knew in the original episode that I was giving an answer many people would find uncomfortable. Yet, I also knew it was vital to address head-on because that original question places the blame and all of the responsibility on the people that current systems, norms, and assumptions keep out.
What I did not know is how much feedback and pushback was going to come.
So many emails and social media messages were positive, proving that many people are open to expand, grow, and address the foundational challenge instead of continuing to be a part of the problem. These messages were inspiring and sounded like this:
- Wow, I never thought of it like that
- Thank you so much! I’m sending this to my recruiter/chief of staff.
- This is what I’ve been trying to describe but couldn’t find the right words…THANK YOU!
- How do I have this conversation with recruiting?
- How do I reach out to people?
- How do I talk to my managers about this?
I answered every single email that came in and I share all those answers here.
I also got a number of ridiculous messages of pushback:
- Women don’t get feedback but men are scared of what will happen if the woman gets offended.
- This is a sad outcome of the #MeToo movement.
- If women want success, they have to stop blaming.
I share my response to people upholding the failing systems that protect poor behavior, weak standards, and affirmative action for straight, white men. Listen for the full response and know this: What was once acceptable is no longer acceptable. If you want to stay in the game of long-term success, you have to grow. You have to get very clear, create growth momentum, and then you have to hold yourselves accountable.
If you’re a woman listening here, and looking to be hired: please know, there’s so much opportunity, and possibility. You deserve to experience a space that is inclusive, and a welcoming space of mutual growth, a space of cultural growth of brave spaces. If that’s not currently your reality, you can make it your reality. My clients build the skill of bravery. And you can too.
This is all available to you and I can help. Book a consult with me at the link below.
