Episode Description

How an email with an impossible question got a surprising answer and how this story shows us all how we can ask BRAVE questions

Baerbel had a goal but all the “normal” paths to achieve it were blocked, so she had to take BRAVE steps even when she thought she might fail to find an unexpected solution

How one German saying kept Baerbel going and inspires her throughout her career: “Everyone is only cooking with water”

An unexpected role model who believe that his disability would automatically bar him from any opportunity of joining a big, sparkling tech company

HIGHLIGHTS:

If you do not ask the question you can never know what the answer could be

Baerbel shares how she struggled to find a ticket to Grace Hopper Celebration, using every known channel without success, before she got creative. First, she reached out to a group of people. Then, when Nicole answered, she asked a bold question, expecting a no and getting a very surprising yes.

Stop answering questions for other people

Baerbel shares her key advice to others: give others that chance to say no. Apply for that job. Ask for that opportunity. Be BRAVE. If you don’t apply, don’t ask, aren’t BRAVE, you answer the question for someone else. Stop that, give them the chance to answer the question first, before you make their decision without them.

BRAVE role model who applied for a job he was convinced he couldn’t get because of his disability

Baerbel shares a story about her BRAVE role model, Alexander. He lives with a disability that is considered a “full” or 100% disability in Germany. He applied for a job with her employer even though he believed he wouldn’t be considered. He had an excellent interview; he was focused and prepared, pleasantly nervous. When we told him yes, he was in disbelief.
