How to Enjoy your senior career

Are you a woman in tech at a senior/executive level who feels lost? Or are you a woman in tech aiming to become a senior/executive and want to know how to enjoy your senior career? If so, this episode is for you.
Far too many women in tech are quietly unhappy. They are passed over for a promotion, and companies are not investing in them. They ask themselves, why is my career not advancing? I do what is necessary.
In a recent, and exclusive global networking event for exec women in tech one woman asked, “Am I the only one who feels lost and underfed?”
The answer was a resounding and clear, “No. You are not alone.”
Like an earlier episode, it is common but not normal for women in tech to be unhappy.
We believe a lie, we believe that when we do a good job, our employers will keep investing in us, in our skills, to keep our interests and our minds busy. When in fact, we need to invest in ourselves!
That is the secret to enjoying your exec career: invest in yourself.

You need to change in your advancing career
If you wish to continue growing in your career, you have to change it up. You have to shift how you think because it’s no longer just your career. It’s also other people’s careers. You’ve got to shift how you network, how you describe yourself, how you show up, the presencing that you have. The way that your compensation is set up, how you ask for things, how you answer things, how you say yes, how you say no, and more. What made you reach the senior level, won’t help you thrive there.
Invest in yourself. Always.
The lies you have to stop believing right now is that you employer is the one that invests in your career and that you invest in yourself only when things are bad. You have to choose to invest in yourself, always. And the investment from your employer is in addition to. That is the truth you must believe.
Doing nothing is not an option
The senior women who are coming to me miserable, lost, ignored, and angry are the ones that need to invest in themselves. Because doing nothing is not an option. Join network groups and affinity groups. Get mentored and mentor. Achieve a certification or an interpersonal skill. Start coaching.
Reject the common and reset the normal.
The common is not going to get to out of misery. You must shift your mindset. You must shift your habits. If you also want to enjoy it, you must invest in yourself when things are good, invest in yourself when things are growing, invest in yourself when you are a leading woman in tech. And until you do that until you make it happen, sadly, you’re going to dip in and out of what is common, but not normal. You don’t have to be common. You don’t have to be normal. You can be extraordinary.
