When do you start looking back at your last year – evaluating what worked and what didn’t?

When do you start looking forward and refreshing your goals – who you want to become, what you want to experience, how you want to work and live?

So many people I know don’t ever do this. Or they do it lightly, from their current moment, without a lot of structure, clarity, or accountability. And 90% center it around the western New Year’s Eve (December 31).

I’m not most people. It’s why I create extraordinary results for me and my clients.

My reflection starts latest on November 1. My goal setting is firmed up by *my* new year – ie, my birthday – on November 21.

I use a structure. I take my time to be diligent and thorough with myself.

I fill notebooks with writing, I use keywords to search my calendar, I pour over my finances, I flip through my journal(s) for my year, I read through my posts and emails, I reflect with my therapist, my coach, my Board of Directors, my bestie.

I ask myself a lot of reflective and visionary questions like:

  • What was my highlight of this year as a woman? As a human? A mother? A wife? A friend? A coach? A patient?

  • What part of this year would I surgically remove from my memory if I could? What did I learn from that person/experience/result?

  • What part of this year would I love the chance for a do over, having learned and grown from the first time?

  • What started out really difficult and feels like a part of me now?

  • How did I feel and who was I throughout this last year?

I journal the answers and I speak them to my voice recorder. I sit (and dog walk!) with what I uncover, what reflects back to me, and how I feel about it all. I notice what feels uncomfortable and exciting and dig even deeper there, with love and compassion.

Then I look years into the future and identify what I want to experience and create, how I want to live, and MOST IMPORTANTLY who I want to become

Then I gently break down those massive life aims into goals for my year. I create goals that make me feel a little doozy in my tummy and lift goosebumps on my skin.

When I have clarity on my year goals, I ask and answer accountability questions like:

  • Does this goal really matter to me? Why?

  • Am I truly willing to show up for this goal, no matter what, fail or succeed?

  • If I knew no matter what that I would fail this goal, would I still work towards it?

  • Why does this goal matter to the people I love?

Then I go even deeper all around momentum:

  • What do I need for this goal?

  • What are the obstacles between me and this goal? (most of them are in my mind)

  • What is already working for me to achieve this goal?

  • What support do I need to become the person living in this goal?

  • How will I grow to become the person who achieves this goal?

  • How does this goal actually map into my life aims?

  • How will I feel when I succeed?

These goals come from my spirit, my desire, my brain, my soul, my mind, my presence, my being.

As I move through my process, I inevitably identify aspects where I want coaching support. A question that keeps circling. A plan that is superficial. A behavior or belief that has created the results I have and I want new results.

As my goals become more concrete, I begin to share them with my trusted circle: my husband, bestie, therapist, Board of Directors.

Then then I WORK MY HEART, MIND, AND ASS off for MY goals. All year long. And longer if ever necessary.

This commitment and approach is my secret to how I built an amazing career as a woman in tech, traveling all over the world (25+ countries for work and more for fun!), earned very well for each country I worked from, was promoted to Director at 30 and pregnant, and so much more.

It is also why in just two years my clients from all over the world have created their own incredible, life and career changing results. I mean, they’ve created over $1million in additional income, accepted so many promotions and new roles, moved to their target locations and employers, and did it all faster, with less stress, fewer hours of work, and far more fun.
